A used car is a great purchase as it enables you to get a vehicle at a fraction of the cost than if you were buying it new. Yet it’s a good idea to keep in mind there are things to watch out for when purchasing a second-hand vehicle. You need to make sure you get it from a reputable place that you can trust, that you’re still getting the vehicle and the features you want and that you’re getting a reasonable price. In this article we take a look at some of the things to check when you buy a second hand car.

Ensure you’re getting it somewhere legitimate

The first thing you need to do when buying a second hand car is make sure you’re going somewhere legitimate. While getting it on Facebook marketplace might seem like a good idea, you don’t necessarily know what you’re getting and would be much safer going somewhere such as a seat approved used car dealer who is going to be legitimate and not rip you off. It’s good going to a dealer so you can speak to the owners, get a real feel for the car and have a look around at the array of different options that are on offer.

Make sure it’s the car you want

It can be easy to just go for a car at a good price, without really thinking about what you want from it. You might go in with an idea, but don’t chuck this out the window when you arrive. Instead, take a list of things you want from your vehicle – perhaps you want it to be a five door, maybe you want it to have things like in-built maps, bluetooth and air con. Then when you’re looking around, find a car that ticks all these boxes for you. You never know, you could find a real bargain!

Check the price is reasonable and fair

When looking at what you want to spend, you need to think about things such as how much the car would cost if you bought it new, how old it is and how many miles it has done. The less mileage the better, but you might also be able to get a better spec car for a cheaper price if it has done more miles. Consider how often you use a car and if a high mileage will matter and other things such as how easy it is to fit kids car seats in if this is needed.

These are just a few tips for purchasing a second hand car that will help you make the right choice and know you’re getting a vehicle that’s going to suit your needs. A car is a big purchase and one that you have for a long time, so you want to make sure you’re doing the right thing. What are some top tips you have for buying a used car?
